On Saturday, September 30th, John Pearson was awarded the Vernon “Lefty” Gomez 2022 Volunteer of the Year Award. This award is given to individuals who have given tireless hours to the Babe Ruth Organization at a local, state, or national level.

The award is named for Vernon “Lefty” Gomez who pitched for twelve years with the New York Yankees, helping his team win seven pennants and six World Series Crowns. In 1934, he registered his best season with a 26-5 record, leading the league in shutouts, strike outs, complete games, innings pitched and winning percentage.

"Lefty's relationship with Babe Ruth Baseball was a very special one. He never allowed his celebrity status to get in the way of his love for the game, his love for kids, and his memories of his friend George Herman "Babe" Ruth," said the late Ron Tellefsen.

'Lefty' spoke at a World Series Banquet, each year, from 1961 until 1988. His professional high praise of Babe Ruth League, Inc. made a community want to be a part of the program. Gomez played a major role in the growth and success of Babe Ruth Baseball. He served on its Board from 1964 until his untimely passing in February of 1989.
